The Nocturnes - Aokigahara

One of the many faces of Emma Ruth Rundle, THE NOCTURNES combine endless dreamy soundscapes with molten Shoegaze for maximum sadness.
Aokigahara is taken from their 2011 album of the same name.

Xmal Deutschland - Qual (1983)

It wasn't all fun and games in the 80's - XMAL DEUTSCHLAND from Hamburg were a good proof that you could walk all over somebody and get away with it.

Ina Deter - Neue Männer braucht das Land 1982

Not exactly a face of the Neue Deutsche Welle because she was around already for quite some time but that song was a biggie back when - the song was asking for a new generation of men. Pat Benatar and Joan Jett rolled into one.

Nichts - Ein deutsches Lied

Not exactly New German Wave here but NICHTS was always something special. Maybe because the group was founded by members of the seminal Dusseldorf Punk band, DER KFC or because of the (quintessential) aseptic vocal style of singer Andrea Mothes.

Anyway, their song 'Ein deutsches Lied' drew a lot of criticism because back then, as a rock band, singing in german was something you'd better not do. It was uncool, it was "verboten." But times have changed, and NICHTS have reunited recently with a new singer.

Burning Rome - Come Out Tonight

BURNING ROME was an LA based band from 1981 who released one underrated slab of AOR/hard rock in 1982 and then faded. On the vocals: Vicki Thomas.

Frl. Menke - Hohe Berge

The women of the New German Wave. This is Frl. (Miss) Menke with her song, "Hohe Berge", a satirical look on what and how the germans do on a vacation. Funny.

Bohemia - Standard Deviation

BOHEMIA were a Post-Punk/New Wave band from Chicago. They formed in 1980 and disbanded in 1984, releasing only one album and several singles.
The group was fronted by vocalist, sax and keyboard player Carla Evonne.

The title track is from their 1981 LP, Deviations. Despite the great sound, this is one tight and rockin' tune.

Although the group didn't get the respect they deserved it is my hope that future generations grow up to know better.

SHITBIRDS - Oh Joy!

The SHIRTBIRDS were an american garage rock group fronted by the wonderful Elinor Blake aka April Shitbird.
Too band they only existed from 1992 - 1995 but at least they've managed to put out several EPs and a compilation CD on Sympathy For The Record Industry. Since Elinor Blake is such a busy bee, we get to know and appreciate her back-catalogue sooner or later. For now, we might rock along to the tunes of the SHITBIRDS.

The Sandwitches - In The Garden

Hailing from the muddy shores of San Fran's Bay Area, these three whimsical sirens known as THE SANDWITCHES (brilliant pun!) played some hauntingly beautiful and eerie country-folk pop reminiscent of THE SHAGGS

Of course, you can't out-shagg THE SHAGGS, but that was never their intention, either. And much like the former, this group meant business. While their songs often sound like lo-fi fieldstones, the (excellent) vocals and overall feel of the band was to the contrary - passioned, soothing, and sometimes luring.

It's too bad the band called it a day after their third and final album, Our Toast, in 2015.
The Song "In the Garden" is from their 2011 album, Mrs. Jones' Cookies.  (JP)

Madder Rose - Beautiful John

MADDER ROSE was an American indie rock band from New York City, and they were active from 1993 - 1999. The band consist of Mary Lorson on Vocals, Billy Coté on Guitar and Backing Vocals, Matt Verta-Ray on Bass and Johnny Kick on the Drums.
Together, tey released a total of four albums and several EP's. The song 'Beautiful John' is off their 1993 debut album, Bring it Down on Seed Records. (JP)
